Abstract. The article provides an assessment of current trends and trends in cartographic design, approaches to enhance the visual and aesthetic appeal of maps as an accompaniment to scientific and popular scientific publications in analog and digital form, identified on the basis of publicly available materials. Historically, maps, in addition to the practical function of their component elements, included artistic techniques corresponding to the art trends of a particular period. In modern times, an original approach to the compilation and design of maps makes it possible to increase the attractiveness of the data they accompany. The key trend is to reduce or eliminate mandatory map elements in favor of increasing the expressiveness, originality, and clarity of the spatial data displayed on it. The key trends at the moment are the desire for concise design, unusual color solutions (colored backgrounds, pastel and translucent colors in the design, artistic techniques when applying symbols), adding illustrations and increasing the information content and effectiveness of maps. Currently, the approach to the design of maps must meet the needs of the majority of consumers and their aesthetic ideas, attract and retain attention, which increases the requirements for cartographers when designing cartographic works.
