Abstract. Natural water supply of the Republic of Kalmykia does not meet the needs of industrial, agricultural and social needs. Kalmykia, due to its geographical position, is turned into the utilizer of chemically polluted waters and industrial effluents. Wastewater discharge in Kalmykia amounts to 86,3% of the total amount of sewage on the territory of the region. The quality of drinking water in the Republic of Kalmykia does not comply with hygienic and sanitary standards, the challenge of finding new groundwater and surface water resources is urgent. We studied the factors affecting the chemical composition of groundwater. It is established that water pollution has a negative impact on the population health in the region. In the Republic of Kalmykia we observe the increase in the number of people suffering from diseases of the urinary and endocrine system, blood and blood-forming organs, parasitic and infectious diseases, including viral hepatitis and bacterial dysentery.
Key words: Republic of Kalmykia, water resources, population health, sanitary and hygienic norms, surface water, groundwater.
